[Intro music] [About the Major]
0:06
ARPAN: Finance is a foundational skill set for all of business. It gives you the quantitative
0:10
and analytical skills to understand and use financial markets.
0:14
AMBREIA: Finance majors learn how to use financial analysis to determine the best way
0:18
to manage wealth, assets, or money based on expectations about the future. Finance is
0:24
all about the future.
0:25
There are two areas of finance: Corporate Finance and Investments.
0:30
In Corporate Finance, you determine how to raise and allocate capital. You then decide
0:35
which projects to take on. Then, you choose what to do with the money the firm has made.
0:39
ARPAN: In Investments, you learn about different financial securities and the markets where
0:44
they are traded. You study derivatives, stocks, bonds, and models that help explain why the
0:50
stock market or interest rates rise and fall.

[Why Choose Finance?]
0:53
ARPAN: So, I majored in Finance because it merges the skills and ideas learned in
0:57
accounting and economics and gives you the ability to analyze a business from a full
1:01
360-degree perspective.

[Careers in Finance]
1:05
AMBREIA: All businesses need people who understand finance, so career options are
1:10
numerous.
1:11
Graduates are prepared for positions with commercial and investment banks, major corporations
1:16
and small businesses, consulting firms, and many other institutions.
1:20
ARPAN: I strongly believe a summer internship will make you more competitive on the job
1:24
market. The finance department does a fantastic job in providing support during your search.
1:30
Since I wanted to get into investment banking, I started interning early in my college career
1:35
and have worked at several financial institutions including PNC Bank.
1:38
AMBREIA: I interned with Deloitte Consulting in DC. I was responsible for the financial
1:43
management of three federal programs with a budget of 20 million dollars.
1:47
[The Terry Experience]
1:48
AMBREIA: With 850 students, Finance is the largest major at Terry. The UGA Finance Society
1:53
offers networking opportunities and the chance to learn from industry professionals. The
1:58
Women in Finance Committee works to address the industry’s gender gap.
2:02
ARPAN: Terry’s Student-Managed Investment Fund manages a portfolio of about $350,000
2:07
of real money. Participants are selected through an application and interview process.
2:11
AMBREIA: If you have a strong quantitative background, good computer skills, and you’re
2:17
interested in how today’s financial decisions affect an organization’s future, then major
2:22
in Finance at Terry.
